A CRADLE SONG by David Heck, Jr.
This has an old text by Thomas Dekker ("Golden slumbers kiss your eyes; smiles
await you when you rise. Sleep pretty wantons do not cry. Care is heavy, therefore
sleep…..") and is similar in texture to The Story below. These are

THE STORY by
David Heck, Jr. On a text by Miska Miles ("The sun comes up from the edge
of earth in the morning. It returns to the edge of earth in the ev’ning. The sun will
rise, but it also will set. The cactus flower will not bloom forever. We will always be
part of the earth…..") this piece has a nice, flowing harp part (also
do-able with the piano if necessary) and a lovely melody in the flute. In 6/8 time with a
few changes – to 3/8 and 5/8 – the three women’s voice parts are skillfully
handled – moving together homophonically for the most part. Not difficult. SSA/Harp

some nice close harmonies, but the voice leading is such that it sings quite easily.

SONG OF A SHEPHERDESS By Wendell Frey
Lyrics by Jeanne Schmelzer ("If I’d been a shepherdess that holy Christmas
night, I would have brought you gifts I made, dear Jesus, wondrous sight. Cradle I’d
shape of olive wood……") have rhythm in them. Frey has put the piece in
6/8 time and it nearly always moves homophonically, in easy vocal ranges for the three
parts. Only the 4th of the five verses here is in canon form. SSA/a’cappella VOR40C03

GLORIA by Carolyn Val-Schmidt This song has real pizzazz and
although it can be used year round, it is especially fitting for the Christmas season.
Written for double treble choir, it has an optional brass accompaniment. It has rhythmic

HANNUKAH'S LIGHT by Thomas Voorhis
Wonderful for any elementary group, the song's original melody is coupled with the Jewish
folk song "Bim Bom." Lyrics include, "Little candles, burning brightly, one
for each of the eight nights, bringing joy to all who celebrate the festival of
lights."
