Chris Potter Biographical Data

Chris Potter Compositions and Recordings

Dr. Potter has recently completed a website which lists over 2000 titles for alto and bass flutes. It may be seen at    http://carbon.cudenver.edu/~cpotter/

Dr. Chris Potter has been the flute teacher at the University of Colorado at Denver for seven years. She has also taught at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Oklahoma State University and the University of Wyoming. In November 1996, she organized the eighth annual Colorado Flute Choir Festival sponsored by the University of Colorado at Denver and Denver University.

An alto flute speciatlist, Dr. Potter has performed on that instrument at four National Flute Association Conventions. She has also given workshops at the New York Convention on rhythm problems and one at the Chicago Convention on teaching tips for teachers. She has been a tape judge for National Flute Association masterclasses and an evaluator for the NFA Newly Published Music Competition.

She performs in Colorado with The Boulder Songmakers who present chamber works for flute, voice and piano and with the Denver Women’s Chorus. In February, 1998, she will be playing in two concerts with the Moscow String Quartet. She can be heard playing bass flute on Bill Douglas’s most recent CD, Songs of Earth, Wind and Sky, due out in February 1998. Dr. Potter has commissioned several works for flute including Six Thorny Love Songs by Sarah Dawson for alto flute and soprano, and Aspen Leaf Rag and Fugue by Pat Holmberg for six bass flutes. Her newest commission will be for a flute soloist doubling on alto flute, bass flute and e flat flute with women’s chorus and piano.

She received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree with Frank Bowen at the University of New Mexico and a Doctorate in Flute from the State University of New York at Stonybrook with Samuel Baron. She has performed in several masterclasses with William Bennett and Marcel Moyse and is the featured performer on one of the video tapes of the Moyse Masterclasses.
